I find writing reviews on clothes hard to do, because isn’t a shirt just a shirt? That is what I thought until my package from barley and birch arrived. I have bought lots of organic clothes for my kids, but these are my favourite. As a mom, the “cool” factor is important to me, but so is the fact that a shirt will last a long time and look good! And can say many, many washes our barley and birch gear is a favourite of both me and the kids.
Our 4 year old loves the cactus tshirt we got him, and I love no matter what the stain is (strawberries, grass or something that we have no idea what it is!) it comes out with no effort what-so-ever.
Other than looking super cool in our gear, we know that buying from barley and birch is a good idea for the planet.
Environmentally, we decided to make every single facet of the line carbon neutral. Not only do we offset any emissions created by production and shipping, but we work with manufacturers and suppliers that are largely powered by solar energy. We chose only certified organic cotton and water-based inks, so we do not pollute the air and water with chemicals. We are made in the United States, so we do not emit the massive amount of carbon associated with trans-ocean shipping. We are largely paper-free and any paper involved with the line is 100% post-consumer recycled. Essentially, we chose to go beyond the level of convenience to be fair to our planet and to our customers.

Our favourite hair accessory company is so on a roll! We are so happy at how well Ladybugs & Lullabies are doing, from 4 celebrity sightings last week on kids like Marcia Cross’s twins to Jennifer Garner & Ben Affleck’s new baby, there is no one better that Ladybugs & Lullabies. They have introduced a new product which we had a York Region Parent reader test. The Ladybugs and Lullabies Binky Links™ are the ultimate no slip pacifier clips. Functionality, ease of use and safety make life easier for mom, while still keeping up with today’s fashion trends with hot patterns and colours for both boys and girls.
Our reviewer says….
We love the soother clip… it’s way better than the one we bought (which has sharp edges on it) and the one from Ladybugs & Lullabies doesn’t . And it is also longer than the other one… not to mention much prettier! I would buy another one if we ever needed it and I’d recommend it to friends.

There’s nothing in the world that compares to having your baby in your arms - the feeling of a sleeping child against your chest, the sweet-smelling, down-covered head under your nose. In the early days with a newborn, mothers have time to enjoy these moments. Then reality sets in.
Baby is still dependent on you for nourishment, care, and comfort but everyday tasks and errands demand your attention. And you may have other children who need you. Life goes on, and there is always too much to do. But busy mothers do not have to give up the bliss of keeping baby close. They can accomplish those tasks that need to be done and still enjoy their baby’s companionship by “wearing” the baby in a carrier. According to Dr. William and Martha Sears, “Baby wearing does good things for babies, and it makes life easier for mothers.”
Join Denise Martin, CD(DONA), Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator, Certified Breastfeeding Councillor and La Leche League Leader as we discuss and evaluate the benefits of baby wearing. You will have the additional opportunity at Wild Child to practice using a sling and evaluate which style of infant carrier meets your fashion sense, and lifestyle. If you purchase a sling on that day, you will receive a 15% discount on your purchase.
Though this is a free event, space is limited so please contact Wild Child to confirm your spot

Preparation:
Place your finger in the middle of a damp facecloth, draping the cloth over your finger. Empty the entire contents of a tube of Boiron’s Camilia over your fingertip. Remove your finger from the cloth, tying with an elastic band to keep the shape. Place the cloth in a baggie & place in the freezer. You’ll also need a squeeze bottle filled with edible, non-nut oil (grape seed, olive or safflower). Don’t forget to ask permission from the child before beginning – never force massage on a child. If you do not make it through all techniques, don’t worry – there will be plenty of chances to try again!
Intra-oral massage:
Place finger in frozen cloth (elastic removed) & apply light, but firm pressure to area on gums where the tooth is erupting; repeat until child gives you the cue to stop
Using slow, firm pressure, make tiny circles along the gums. Be sure to massage top & bottom gums
Remove your finger from cloth & allow child to suck or chew on cloth while you massage their face & ears
Facial Massage:
Place a small amount of oil (less than the size of a dime) in your hands; rub your hands together to warm the oil
Massaging the jaw:
Cup hands under child’s head just behind the ears; then slowly glide the hands along the jaw towards the chin; repeat 3 times
Using 1 or 2 fingers (depends on size of child), make small circles from just below the right earlobe down to the chin; repeat on left side; massage each side 3-4 times
Using 1 or 2 fingers make small circles around the outline of the child’s lips; starting at the middle of the upper lip & working both sides simultaneously to meet at the middle of the lower lip
Massaging the sinuses (teething can place a lot of pressure on the sinuses):
Glide your forefingers down each side of the bridge of the nose, follow the cheekbone across & then end the stroke on the temples. You are essentially making a semi-circle under the eye. Repeat 3-4 times
Make small circles along the eyebrows, using 1 or 2 fingers, ending at the temples. Repeat 3-4 times.
Place fingertips at the middle of the hairline. Glide hands away from one another, ending at temples. Repeat, moving hands down forehead slightly, until last set of strokes are following eyebrow line.
Massaging ears (use extremely light pressure around ears!):
Using 1 finger, make small circles starting at the point where the top of the ear attaches to the head, massage around behind the ear, down to where the lobe meets the head, and around in front of the ear until you are back at the top of the ear. Repeat on other ear.
Finishing massage:
Glide fingertips from forehead down each side of the face, meeting at the chin
Finish with a kiss on the nose! “All Done!”

When choosing which prenatal classes to take, the various options can be overwhelming. Here are a few questions to help you focus on what classes will fit your specific needs.
Is this your first child? Most classes are geared towards first-time parents. Many people don’t realize there are classes for second, third, etc. time parents who just need a refresher on the basics of birth and newborns.
Where (& how) are you planning to give birth? If you are planning a home birth, a hospital-oriented prenatal class is probably not for you! Likewise, if you are planning a Cesarean, you may want to find a class that does not spend the bulk of its time on natural birth options. If you are planning a medication-free birth (at home or in the hospital) you will want to research available classes in your area that focus on pain management. These can include hypnosis, massage techniques, breathing techniques, yoga, as well as prenatal classes using the Bradley method or Lamaze. The internet is a great resource to read about various options and to make an informed decision.
If this is not your first birthing experience, what would you change about your previous experience(s)? Many parents look back on their first birthing experience and think about what would have worked better for them. Most of the time this involves choices regarding pain management. If you received an epidural and were dissatisfied with the experience you may want to consider classes in natural pain management such as the ones mentioned above.
What information are you hoping to obtain from classes? Are you looking for information to get you through labour and delivery only; or do you want information about newborn care? Be sure to ask the organizer of the course for a list of topics covered.
Do you have a special need or circumstance? Are you having multiples? Do you have gestational diabetes or other health concerns? Are you over the age of 35? There are many classes specifically designed for different high-risk pregnancies.
Are you looking for a quick class with little time commitment; or are you looking to develop friendships with your fellow classmates? Accelerated programs are often available for parents who are close to their due dates or have time constraints. If you have time though, you may want to choose a class that covers the material slowly over the course of many weeks. These classes often arrange a reunion after the babies are born.
Do you want to take a class as a couple or individually? Traditionally, prenatal classes are geared towards couples. Now we are seeing mom-based and dad-based classes. They generally act as support groups where topics are discussed which may not be approached in co-ed atmospheres.
How many classes can you realistically commit to? Money and time are generally your deciding factors for what you can or cannot do. Narrow your needs down. What must you learn? What is a want versus a need? Many parents choose to commit to one generalized prenatal class, such as with a doula or nurse, and one or two specialized classes, such as pain management classes or support groups.
I recommend parents do their research on available classes in their area during their first trimester and sign up for these courses as soon as possible. They tend to book up fast as many are small classes. That doesn’t mean you are too late if you are in your second trimester, but you may not get your first choice of times or classes. Planning ahead, knowing exactly what you want from your classes, and researching all your options will ensure that you feel prepared and informed heading into this incredible time of your life. ________________________________________________________________________
